The eclectic Canadian group Timber Timbre features singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Taylor Kirk, keyboardist Mathieu Charbonneau, guitarist Simon Trottier, and drummer Olivier Fairfield. Taking inspiration for the project's name from a cabin in Ontario where Kirk made some of his first recordings, Timber Timbre self-released two albums -- 2006's Cedar Shakes and the following year's Medicinals -- before signing to the Canadian imprint Arts & Crafts. The label released Timber Timbre's self-titled album, which made the Polaris Prize long list, in 2009. After touring in 2010 with artists such as Jónsi and the Low Anthem, Timber Timbre returned with their fourth album, Creep on Creepin' On, in early 2011; it was shortlisted for that year's Polaris Prize. In 2013, they returned to the studio to lay tracks down for 2014's Hot Dreams, which included vintage soul and country influences. The trio decamped to Paris for 2017's Sincerely, Future Pollution, which combined '80s sounds with commentary on the state of the world in the late 2010s.
With an aesthetic emphasis on the decay and ephemerality of recollection, Dissociation Tapes Vol 1 is a slow rumination found in the panic of sudden inertia and limbo after over a decade of near-constant travel. The songs discuss the flailings and folly of attempts at
self-medication and self-regulation, habits and states of dissociation, inebriation, and meditations. Not
aesthetically dissimilar from the folk-and-blues songwriting experimentations heard on Cedar Shakes (2005) and Medicinals (2007), the songs here embrace a low-fidelity sound with arrangements that are classical and
familiar while modulating and folding temporally.
Following the recording of Sincerely, Future Pollution, Timber Timbre’s Taylor Kirk returned to La Frette studio in France to record the Dissociation Tapes Volume 1 EP. The three songs were revisited in Austin, Texas for additional recording and mixing with producer Craig Ross (Daniel Johnston, Lisa Germano). Originally a cassette-only release in 2020, the songs will be performed live for the first time with accompaniment by Erin Lang (Foundlings)..
