Garden Centre + The Tubs

  • Flying Duck Renfield Street Glasgow, Scotland United Kingdom (map)

GARDEN CENTRE

Garden Centre is a band formed out of necessity. The specific function of the band was to tell the story of a group of people who found themselves drawn to an abandoned plant nursery in southern England. The band hoped that their messages were transmitted efficiently, broadcast via audio in the form of their début album 'Garden Centre'.

With their task well and truly complete, the members of Garden Centre have become distracted. Some members still obsess over semi-rural boredom and exploration. Others have the audacity to write love songs. The most cretinous members opt to write about energy drinks exclusively. Garden Centre features members of Joanna Gruesome, King Of Cats, Porridge Radio and Ex Void. They make hyperactive music that is never too far from complete collapse."

THE TUBS

The Tubs were formed by two of the primary songwriters from the critically lauded pop group Joanna Gruesome-Owen Williams & George Nicholls- as a way of expanding the dimensions of their ‘‘jubilant’ (New York Times), ‘hook stuffed’ compositions (Pitchfork).

Drawing influence from Antipodean pop, contemporary post-punk, Cleaners from Venus style jangle and Robert Wyatt style pastoralism, The ‘Tubullar Sound’’s breadth is forever growing wider. The ‘Names EP’, sees the group embrace a snarkier, more hostile side of themselves, perhaps attributable to Williams, bassist Max Warren, and drummer Matthew Green's involvement in Sniffany & The Nits (Thrilling Living)- one of London’s most troubling punk bands.

DINNER NIGHT

Fresh from a sentence served at the Glasgow School of Art and down to their last can of ravioli, flatmates Max Lunn (Yung KP) and Becky Sparks found themselves seeking motivation for their next project during Summer 2019. Newfound habits like singing to each other about their day in the vein of the Pastels and workshopping impersonations of Frank Back while debating recipes for that night's meal provided the inspiration to form Dinner Night.

With inspiration comes excited energy - energy that’s important to capture. Between jamming out songs and working on demos Max and Becky kept up the excitement with star jumps to get the juices flowing before shutting off the lights and donning head-torches to record to foster a fun and uniquely creative environment. Soon Gaspard Casanova (Double Discone) and Holly Beer (Middle Child) joined them at the table as demoing continued until “the current situation” slowed things down a bit.

After another sentence served, this time in their respective flats during lockdown, Dinner Night emerged, reunited like an Autobot - stronger than the sum of its parts - and got to recording after a quick haircut. Meeting at their rehearsal space in The Barras, Gaspard oversaw proceedings, producing three singles from Dinner Nights' growing repertoire.

With Stan Welch (Nanny’s Favourites) joining their ranks Dinner Night have reached their full complement and are ready to gig. Stan even owns a van making things a bit easier, fancy booking them?
