Evripidis and His Tragedies is the alter-ego of Evripidis Sabatis. The "Tragedies" are the devastating, confessional, self-sarcastic and often darkly humorous pop songs that draw on his classical piano training, queer sensibility and storytelling skills to examine and ultimately own up to the vicissitudes of life. Evripidis' pop inclinations take us for a bumpy, dancey ride across the fine line between tragedy and joie de vivre.

A musician, writer and visual artist from Athens, Evripidis moved to Barcelona in 2004, started playing the piano and singing on his own in small bars and soon became a permanent fixture in the local underground scene as a performer, dj and independent promoter. With a plethora of local collaborators he released two albums (Evripidis and His Tragedies, A Healthy Dose of Pain), an EP (…And it Was Good While it Lasted Baby!) and music for short films. A third album (Futile Games in Space and Time), recorded between Barcelona, New York and Athens, broadened his sound and brought some international collaborations with artists like Sarah.P and LD Beghtol (The Magnetic Fields). His fourth album (Mia Triti stin Cantina) was prompted by a tragic personal loss and marked a change of pace. It was sung in Greek and featured just a handful of musicians, amongst them fellow Greek artist Nalyssa Green.

Until now Evripidis’ records have been piano-driven, multi-instrumental indie pop, steeped in melancholia but with a joyous beat, unconventional song structures, lush chord progressions and vocal harmonies. His forthcoming project strays from that former big-band approach, taking a sparer synth pop direction with songs in English, Spanish and Greek. In them he mixes once again his love of Doo Wop, Girl Groups, New Wave, Indie Pop and Bedroom Pop, this time with richly textured electronic soundscapes. After releasing Evil Love, The Reason and Your Dreams with that new sound, he is about to drop Melancholia, a new song and video, on Snap! Clap! Club.

Evripidis and His Tragedies has played in international festivals as Primavera Sound, FIB, BAM, Indietracks, Eurosonic Noorderslag or Synch Festival, in museums like MACBA or Caixa Forum, in various venues in Spain, Greece, UK, Germany, France, U.S.A, Portugal and The Netherlands. He has opened for international artists like John Grant, Jens Lekman, Peter Bjorn and John or Arab Strap.

2019-20 found Evripidis and His Tragedies playing Cologne Popfest (Cologne), Primavera Sound and Montjuic Castle (Barcelona), and CaixaForum (Madrid), alongside many online shows during the Great Lockdown, most notably as part of the landmark international Cuarentena Festival.

He is currently putting the final touches on his latest collection of songs and is ready to face the challenge of what being a musician might mean in this new world.
